Our mitochondria are the gatekeepers of life as we know it; maintaining their function is key for optimal health and longevity. These tiny little organelles are the energy factories that power our biology. When they fail to thrive, so do we. Until recently, mitochondria have been dubbed the “powerhouse of the cell,” but they are so much more than that.

The rise in autoimmune conditions and metabolic and neurological disorders we see today is the result of mitochondria that have been poisoned by the stressors of modern-day life. We used to believe chronic disease was irreversible, but now we know that true healing is possible, and one way we can do it is by restoring mitochondrial function.

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Terry Wahls to discuss the top foods and lifestyle factors that support and damage our mitochondria. Dr. Wahls shares how she healed herself from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis using the principles of Functional Medicine—i.e., correcting the root cause through targeted nutrient and lifestyle interventions.

Dr. Wahls is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Wahls was awarded the Institute for Functional Medicine’s Linus Pauling Award in 2018 for her contributions to research, clinical care, and patient advocacy. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life. She has conducted several clinical trials, coauthored 24 scientific publications, and is pioneering a way to make her protocol more accessible by making it available online to the public.
